Bereishit Rabbah
Chapter 77 : 2
Rabbi Chunya said, "He appeared to him in the image of a shepherd. This one had a flock and this one had a flock. This one had camels, and this one had camels. He said to him, "Take across what is yours, and after that, I will take across what is mine." Jacob, our father, took across what was his, and said, "Let us return and let us see, lest we forgot something." After he returned, "a man wrestled with him" (Genesis 32:25)."
Chapter 77 : 3

Rabbi Chama bar Chanina said, "He was the ministering angel of Esav. And that is [what he meant] when he said to him, 'For this have I seen your face as I saw the face of God and you have accepted me' (Genesis 33:10). There is a parable about an athlete that got up and wrestled with the son of the king. He lifted his eyes and he saw that the king was standing behind him and [so] he fell to the ground in front of [the son]. This is what [is meant by that which] is written, 'and he saw that he could not overcome him.'" Rabbi Levi said, "'And he saw' the Divine Presence 'and he could not overcome him.'" Said Rabbi Berachia, "We do not know who won, whether it was the angel or whether it was Yakov. And from that which it is written, 'and a man wrestled (vayitabek, the root of which contains the letters that spell dust) with him,' prove who was covered in dust - the man that was with him.' Said Rabbi Chananya bar Yitschak, "The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, 'He is coming against you and he has five charms in his hand: his merit, the merit of his father, the merit of his mother, the merit of his grandfather, and the merit of his grandmother - measure yourself [and see] if you can stand even against his merit.' Immediately, 'And he saw and he could not overcome him.' There is a parable of a king that had a wild dog and a tamed lion. And the king took his son and endeared him to the lion, [such that] if the dog would take him on, the king would say to him, 'The lion was not able to stand in front of him and you want to take him on?' So [too], if the nations of the world will come to take on Israel, the Holy One, blessed be He, will say to them, 'Your ministering angel was not able to stand in front of him and you want to take on his children?'" "And he touched the hollow of his thigh" - he touched the righteous men and women, the prophets and prophetesses, which were to arise from him in the future. And which is this? The generation of persecution (shemad). "And he touched the hollow of Yakov's thigh" - Rabbi Berachia and Rabbi Eliezer [disagreed about this]: Rabbi Eliezer said, "He pressed it down." Rabbi Berachia said in the name of Rabbi Assi, "He split it like a fish." Rabbi Nachman bar Yakov said, "He separated it from its place, as it is written (Ezekiel 23:18), 'and my soul was separated etc... like my soul was separated' [in which the context shows that the verb for touching also means separating]." Said Rabbi Chanina bar Yitschak, "That whole night both of them were striking each other, the shield of this one across from the shield of that one. Once the sun rose, 'And he said, send me away from here as the sun has risen.'

((He establishes the word of his servant and the advice of his angels will complete(Isaiah 32:26):, Rabbi Berechiah in the name of Rabbi Levi said: "He fulfills the matter of his servant and the advice of his angels will be fulfilled". We are not. Know that he says (Isaiah 43:26) .He is a resident of Jerusalem and of the cities of Judah, but one angel that is revealed to our father Jacob is what is written : And he shall say unto him, What is thy name, it is not Jacob? And the advice of his angels will be fulfilled, for the Holy One, Blessed is He, revealed to our Father Jacob to take the decree of the angel who said to him not to Jacob, and even the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, Yes, this is what is written in (Genesis 32:10 ): And God will say unto him, Thy name is Jacob. If Jacob does not say, Bar Kappara said that whoever he calls Abraham Avram goes through. Rabbi Levi said, "Do you not do it?" (Bereishit 17: 5). And your name was Abraham, as he did. The people of the Great Assembly called him Avram, as it is written (Nehemiah 9: 7): "You are the God of God whom you chose in Abram, etc." He recounts and says that until Abram chose him. A woman who calls Sarah is passing by, but he is the one who commands her. Let the reader call upon Jacob to pass by, let him not uproot Jacob's name, but rather (Bereishit 35:10): For if Israel is your name, Israel will be sterile and will be a prey. Rabbi Zechariah In the name of Rabbi Acha, from all places your name will be named, but if Israel is your name, Jacob will be sterile and Israel will add to it. (Bereshit 32:29): For you have served with God and with men, and you have been able to wrestle with the upper ones, and to overcome them, and with the lower ones , With the upper ones, the angel, Rabbi Chama bar Chanina said that Esau's minister was, to whom he said (Genesis 33:10): For therefore I saw your face as the face of God, from the face of God, even in the face of Din.
What is the face of God ? (Exodus 23:15) . with the lower ones, and with them, it was done, and their elves. Another thing, because Sarit with God, is that your icon is engraved on top. ))

Observe that it is written concerning the time that Jacob went to Aram-naharaim: And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: “If God be with me” (Gen. 28:20). At first He granted his every request. He went there and became wealthy, but when he returned without fulfilling his vow, He turned Esau against him, and Esau sought to kill him. And though Esau took the two hundred she-goats from him, Jacob did not trouble to perform his vow. Whereupon He turned the angel against him and they wrestled together, but still he did not take note, as it is said: And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him (ibid. 32:26). It was Samael, Esau’s guardian angel, who wanted to kill him, as is said: When he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh (ibid., v. 27). When he still was not persuaded to fulfill his vow, the anguish occasioned by Dinah’s experience befell him, as is said: And Dinah went out. When he continued to refrain from carrying out his vow, the tragedy of Rachel’s death occurred, as it is said And Rachel died and was buried (ibid. 35:19). This confirms the opinion of R. Samuel the son of Nahman that one who vows and fails to fulfill his vow brings about the death of his wife, as it is said: If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee? (Prov. 22:27).))

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying … “He cometh to meet thee with four hundred men” (Gen. 32:7). Thereupon, Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed (ibid., v. 8). Why is the word for “fear” repeated in this verse? He was greatly afraid that he might be killed and distressed lest he should be forced to kill. Jacob was an extremely powerful man. Proof of this is that he had subdued a mighty angel, as is said: So he strove with an angel and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him (Hos. 12:5). But at that moment he began to plead for mercy, as it is said: Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau (Gen. 32:12).

R. Isaac stated; Our master, Moses, stood beside the flames and dropped bundles of wool into them, thus causing the flames to sink into the earth, as is said: And the fire abated (ibid., v. 15). This also teaches us that the righteous are superior to the ministering angels. Furthermore, Jacob seized the mighty angel and vanquished him, as it is said: And there wrestled a man with him, etc. (Gen. 32:25). And when it was necessary, he sent two camps of angels as his emissaries to Esau, as is stated: And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau.

SO JACOB WAS LEFT ALONE. What is written above of the matter (in vs. 8 [7])? THEN JACOB WAS VERY FRIGHTENED. WHEN THE HOLY ONE SAW HOW JACOB WAS DEPRESSED, < according to what > R. Berekhyah said, he sent four companies of angels to make war with Esau all night.24 < When > the first company came, < one of the angels > said to them (to Esau's people): To whom do you belong? They said to them: We are children of Isaac, and < the angels > assaulted25 him (Esau). He said to them:26 We are children of Abraham's children; they began assaulting him. When < Esau's people > said: We are brothers of Jacob, they began to leave them alone. Out of respect for Jacob we shall leave you alone. Thus (in Gen. 32:25 [24]): SO JACOB WAS LEFT ALONE. Now Jacob did not know how many miracles the Holy One had done for him. He did nothing; but, when he came in the morning, his brother Esau said to him (in Gen. 33:8): WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ALL THIS HOST (MHNH) WHICH I HAVE MET? "Which I have seen" is not written here, but WHICH I HAVE MET. Now Jacob did not know that the Holy One had sent angels to him. Rather he was of the opinion that < Esau > had been occupied with the same gift (MNHH) that he had sent to him. He therefore had said to him < that it was meant > (as stated in ibid., cont.): TO FIND FAVOR IN THE EYES OF MY LORD (Esau). Then, when the Holy One saw that he was afraid, he sent Michael to him to engage in strife with him. What did the angel do with him? He appeared to him in the likeness of a shepherd.27 It is so stated (in Gen. 32:25-27 [24-26]): AND SOMEONE WRESTLED WITH HIM < UNTIL THE RISING OF THE DAWN >. WHEN HE SAW THAT HE HAD NOT PREVAILED AGAINST HIM, < HE WRENCHED HIS THIGH AT ITS SOCKET >…. THEN HE SAID: SEND ME AWAY < BECAUSE THE DAWN IS RISING >….

|(( 11. Rabbi Yitzchak said, therefore, the angels left him alone with the officer appointed for Esau, who arrived with heavenly approval. At just that time, the others left to sing before the Holy One, blessed be He, as was required at that precise moment. Later, they returned to him. This is the meaning of the verse, "I am unworthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth and now I have become two camps." The camp of the Shechinah and his own household, however, consist of one camp, as it is written, "This is Elohim's camp" (Ibid. 3). Therefore, why is it written "two camps"? it is to teach that he was perfect in both aspects; from the white and red, denoting Chassadim and Chochmah, from right and left. Hence he says, "two camps."

He looked at the body of Jacob and saw it was comprised of parts of both the right and left sides, being the perfection of the Central Column. Since the Other Side can have no hold on perfection, only on imperfection, he could not overcome him. Thus, it possesses an aspect of imperfection and the angel seized it, and "the hollow of Jacob's thigh was put out of joint." ))

chanoch's Commentary
The hollow of his thigh is the sciatic nerve which runs down the spine and through the leg. This is its job and it was created for that purpose. so why is it imperfect? Because it is not all within one place - the body. The aspect of being outside the body creates a small aspect of imperfection. What else in our world is slightly imperfect and yet serves its purpose. Understand this well.

(( 14. For this reason it is written, "The angel of Hashem encamps round about those who fear Him, and he delivers them." He circled him on all sides in order to save him from the officer of Esau. 1- Rashi Commentary
And Jacob was left: He had forgotten small bottles and returned for them. — [from Gen. Rabbah 77:2, Chullin 91a]
and a man wrestled: Heb. Menachem (p. 14) explains: And a man became covered with dust, derived from אָבָק, dust, for they were raising dust with their feet through their movements. I believe, however, that it is a term meaning that he attached himself, and it is an Aramaic expression [found in the Talmud] (Sanh. 63b):“After they became attached (דָּאִבִיקוּ) to it,”“and he would tie it (וְאָבִיק לֵיהּ מֵיבַק),” for so is the habit of two people who make strong efforts to throw each other down, that one embraces the other and attaches himself to him with his arms. Our Rabbis explained (Gen. Rabbah 77:3, 78:3) that this was the prince (guardian angel) of Esau.
2 - The Lubavitcher Rebbe Commentary
The sages teach that Jacob had sent everyone else across the river, but had some items which had been forgotten, so he stayed behind to gather up those things. He was alone and in the night, Esau’s guardian angel approached him as a man and the wrestled throughout the night. They also teach that this wrestling was a “physical manifestation of the two brothers’ inner, spiritual struggle over the birthright.”
25 Thus Jacob remained on his own on the north shore of the Yabok River. Esau's guardian angel assumed the physical form of a man and wrestled with him until the break of dawn. Their wrestling was a physical manifestation of the two brothers' inner, spiritual struggle over the birthright.
26 When Esau’s guardian angel saw that he could not overcome him, he touched Jacob’s hip joint, so that Jacob’s hip joint became dislocated as he wrestled with him.
27 The angel then said, “Let me leave, for I must go sing my daily morning praise to God, for dawn is breaking.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you leave unless you first bless me by acknowledging my right to the blessings my father gave me, which Esau is now contesting.”
The angel then said, “Be patient. God will soon appear to you and give you an alternative name. No longer shall it be said that your name is just Jacob[Ya’akov, from the verb akov—“ensnare”22], implying that you usurped Esau’s blessings, but rather, you will also be called Israel [Yisrael, from serarah, “nobility,” and also meaning “striven with God”], implying that you obtained the blessings from your father honorably, for you have striven with me—an angel of God—and with men—i.e., Esau and Laban—over what is rightfully yours, and you have prevailed over the three of us. I will be present to consent to this additional naming, thereby acknowledging your right to the birthright.“
30 Jacob inquired and said, “Please tell me your name.”He replied, “Why do you ask what my name is? We angels have no fixed names; our names merely express the missions we are sent on; they therefore change as our missions change.“Jacob did not agree to wait until God would appear to him at some unknown point in the future, because he wanted Esau’s guardian angel to acknowledge his right to the birthright before he confronted Esau himself. So, as Jacob had requested, the angel blessed Jacob then and there. Jacob then released his hold on the angel and he disappeared.
Third Reading 31 Jacob named the place Peniel ["the face of God"], "for," he said, "I beheld an angel of God face to face, yet my life was spared."
32 While Jacob was still at the site of the struggle, the experience of seeing the angel was foremost in his mind, so he alluded only to "the face of God" when he named the place. But after leaving the site of the struggle, the memory of the direct experience was overshadowed by the remarkable fact that he had survived the awesome experience of confronting Esau's guardian angel. Therefore, he began to refer to the place not as Peniel but as Penuel [a contraction of the words panav El, "his face (beheld an angel of) God"].23 Miraculously, the sun rose upon him earlier than it naturally should have as he passed Penuel—just as it had set earlier than it naturally should have when he returned from Charan in order to pray at Mount Moriah24—because he was limping, favoring his dislocated hip, and God wanted the sun's healing power25 to speed his recovery. The injury did not heal completely, however, until a year and a half later.26
3 – Sforno Commentary
ויאבק איש עמו, this was the work of an angel at the instigation of G’d (that is why he is called איש). The description is parallel to Kings II 13,17 It is immaterial whether the instrument of the salvation is a merely symbolic one such as the arrows described in the Book of Kings which Elisha instructed King Yoash to shoot in the direction of the far away Kingdom of Aram. Salvation occurs at the end of a period of ups and downs, and though Yaakov/Israel suffered many reverses in his struggle with Esau, (in the historical global struggle between the two philosophies) in the end Yaakov triumphs. [freely translated as the author is ambiguous to my mind. Ed.] The blessing given by the angel here to Yaakov at the end of the struggle, at daybreak, symbolises the synopsis of Jewish history.
4 - David Kimhi "Radak" Commentary
ויאבק איש עמו, he wrestled with him so intensely that a cloud of dust enveloped them while they were struggling.
איש, the same type of איש as in Joshua 5,13, i.e. an angel. This was the angel Gavriel, described as איש par excellence in Daniel 9,21. The reason why these angels are called איש is because they appear to the people with whom they converse in human guise. The types of angels who speak with man are referred to as איש, as they appear either in a vision or while the person to whom they appear is fully awake. G’d had sent this angel to Yaakov to strengthen his courage, not to fear Esau. If Yaakov could prevail over an angel, surely he had no reason to be afraid of an encounter with someone like Esau! The fact that the struggle lasted until daybreak was an allusion to Yaakov that after a period of night, i.e. problems, adversity, there would come a period of light, peace and prosperity coupled with security.
יאמר שלחני, he meant that he had been sent by G’d to Yaakov to demonstrate to him by a factual illustration that he would not overcome him, and that a mere human being such as Esau would certainly not be able to harm him. Now that I have accomplished my mission, please let me go. In other words, “unless you have any other request from me, I am leaving.” Yaakov said that indeed he did want something else of him, and until that was granted he would not let him depart. He wanted to receive the angel’s blessing. The reason that the angel added the words.
כי עלה השחר, that it is already becoming morning, was that Yaakov had no reason to be afraid, as the night, the time for fear, had already passed. Being alone, without escort during daylight is no reason for concern.
כי שרית עם אלוקים, with the angel. He wrestled with you and could not overpower you to the extent of felling you.
According to one of the commentaries which we quoted (verse 26) that the angel had assumed human form, this experience was something new for Yaakov. For the first time he had seen a divine being face to face while being awake. Adding to this the fact that this angel had twisted his hip joint out of shape and he had survived this he was amazed that he had survived such an encounter. This is why he used the expression He added the words
ותנצל נפשי, this is a statement Yaakov never made on other occasions when he had other visions. Seeing that we explained that the entire episode with the angel was a prophetic vision, the reason why he used the expression “face to face,” must be that the vision was so real to him that in his vision he reacted physically to the angel that appeared to him. If you were to consider this interpretation as unlikely, consider that we have been told that Moses spoke to G’d “face to face.” (Exodus 33,11 and again in Deuteronomy 5,4) the description “face to face” merely tells us about the realism involved in such prophetic encounters Moses experienced, as well as what the entire people experienced at the revelation at Mount Sinai when the mountain quaked, there was lightning and thunder, etc. Having experienced such an intense vision Yaakov understandably marvels at having survived such an experience, one in which he was totally involved, body and soul. The recollection of such intense experiences though having occurred in the form of visions, was strong enough to carry over into the affected people’s waking hours.

((Among the most famous stories of angels in the Bible is the encounter between the patriarch Jacob and an angel with whom he wrestles all night. In the morning, when Jacob asks his adversary to identify himself, the angel admonishes him not to ask. Afterwards, Jacob names the place P’niel — literally “face of God.” In explaining this choice, the Torah makes plain that the wrestling adversary was an emissary of God: “I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life has been preserved.”))
So Jacob named the place Peniel, meaning, “I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life has been preserved.”
1 - Targum Neofiti
(( 25 And Jacob was left alone and the angel Sariel wrestled with him in the appearance of a a man and he held him until the column of dawn arose …
26 When the angel saw that he could not prevail against Jacob , he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was disjointed as he wrestled with him .
27 And he [the angel] said : " let me go because the rise of the column of dawn has arrived and because the time of the angels on high to praise has aarived and I am chief of those who praise ." . And he [Jacob] said : " I will not let you go until you
28 , 29 bless me." . And he said to him : " what is your name ? " . And he said : " Jacob." And he said " your name shall be no longer be called Jacob , but Israel , because you have conducted yourself as a prince with angels from before the Lord, and with men and have prevailed against them …"
Jacob said : " Tell me your name ." . He said : " why do you ask my name ? " and he blessed him there.
31 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel " because I have seen angels from before the lord face to face and my life has ben spared . " ))

And Jakob remained alone beyond the Jubeka; and an Angel contended with him in the likeness of a man. And he said, Hast thou not promised to give the tenth of all that is thine? And, behold, thou hast ten sons and one daughter: nevertheless thou hast not tithed them. Immediately he set apart the four firstborn of the four mothers, and there remained eight. And he began to number from Shimeon, and Levi came up for the tenth. Michael answered and said, Lord of the world, this is Thy lot. And on account of these things he (Michael) remained from God at the torrent till the column of the morning was ascending.

And he said, I will not let thee go, until thou bless me.

And Jakob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, I have seen the Angels of the Lord face to face, and my soul is saved.
